Mitral Valve disease
The next most common valve with problems is the mitral valve, also on the
left side of the heart. As opposed to the aortic valve, the problem with the
mitral valve is usually from blood leaking backwards, called mitral
regurgitation. Also different from the aortic valve, this valve can often be
repaired. Risk of death with this surgery is about 6%. Again, the most important
determinant of death is the strength of your heart
This is a picture of how a repair is done. Usually, there is one section
which leaks blood backwards. You can cut this section out and suture the ends
together and support the whole repair with a ring.
